At the sound of Eric's voice, Amber turned on her heel and faced him. It wasn't as if she could go the rest of her life without ever talking to him again, as much as she'd have liked to. Their circumstances wouldn't allow that. Until one of them quit or got fired, they'd have to deal. And that might be a while yet; it seemed he had no other options, and Amber wasn't letting this job go.
She folded her arms tightly, lifting her chin. However, upon seeing his deflated posture and expression, Amber mollified. Her rigid stance relaxed further with his apology. Eric felt bad. Good. He had every reason to.
"I--" A harried nurse nearly crashed into Amber from behind, effectively cutting off her sentence. Amber looked around the corridor, with hospital staff streaming in from both directions. This was a conversation they needed to have, but this wasn't the place for it. Word of a heated discussion would get around. If it did, Amber might as well wrap a banner around the hospital declaring that Dr. Eric Foreman sure knew how to make a woman come, their affair would be so known at large. And if the gossip started, House would know about them faster than it took lightning to hit the ground.
There was another vital factor. Eric represented Cuddy. Cuddy was House's boss; what kind of power did that give Eric over House? Not much, Amber thought. But if Eric had any control over House, or if his opinion mattered at all to Cuddy... the less Amber aggravated him, the better. He'd apologized today and on Friday. She wouldn't forget or forgive his callous treatment, but she could be more civil. For now, until she understood the intricacies of the power structure.
"It doesn't matter now," Amber said. She put her had on the door to the patient's door, sliding it open. "It's not as if things could've ended any differently. Let's just try to work together, okay?"
