The image of Eric humiliated and furious stayed with her for the rest of the day, the scene replaying in her mind during idle moments. She'd wanted to hurt and shame him as much as he had her, and she'd gotten her wish.
Funny how this victory felt a lot like losing.
After she and the others got up from their knees, having verified that their crashed and collapsed John Doe had only been mirroring other patients, Thirteen turned to Amber, hands in her pockets. Insolence defined itself in her smirk. "So you had a good weekend?"
"Jealousy doesn't become you," Amber snapped. Thirteen, her smirk all the sharper, must've gotten all the satisfaction she'd needed out of successfully riling Amber up, since she left it at that.
House, too, had his fun, extra lewdness in his sneers at her. He asked if it was true what they said about size, and marveled that she hadn't eaten Eric's head after the act ("Saving it for later?"), but that was the extent of it. At the end of the day, she was still employed as was, anticlimactically, everyone else.
Maybe dating Eric wouldn't kill her career. And even if, at some point, House stopped being tickled pink over the affair and started disapproving of inter-office romances, Amber could argue the case her way. Hadn't they all seen she had the upper hand over him? If Eric was the enemy, it'd be in House's best interest she sleep with him. Through her, he could influence Eric, and thus Cuddy too.
It was twisted logic, but then again, House liked twisted.
After no one was fired, and damn that was annoying, she wished someone could've been weeded out, Amber hit all the usual spots: the Diagnostics Department, the locker room, the lounge, the cafeteria. He wasn't in any of them. Either she kept missing him, or he'd already left. Or was about to leave.
She jogged down the stairs and came out to the entrance. There he was, just as curved and clouded as he had been the first time they met, and she smiled. Did he make a habit of leaving the workplace depressed? He really did need a bright spot in his life. She slowed down her pace til she glided up besides him. "Hey," she greeted. "How about we start over again?"
