He’d gone from making ridiculous requests to insulting her. “Since when have I been going off on my own or getting in the way?” Okay, she’d been surly when he’d told her to find a case, but aside from that, she’d participated fully, doing everything he asked her to. If the case wasn’t going as well as he’d like to save his pride, that was hardly her fault. Amber did not appreciate having the blame thrown on her.

They’d talk about this later, when there wasn’t a patient taking the bullet train down south.

Amber followed on Eric’s heels into the conference room, catching every single one of the inquisitive and accusatory looks thrown her way. Oh, she knew what they were thinking—third time today she was caught alone with him. Yes, we’re fucking and it makes us closer than any of you, she wanted to bark out; get over it. She almost did, too, tired as she was of being judged at the drop of a hat, but Eric diving straight into the debate reminded Amber that there were more pressing issues.

“Too fast for MS,” Amber countered in an instant. Casey had lupus, therefore it couldn’t be anything else. “All her symptoms appeared in fewer than twenty-four hours. The way it’s attacking her body and her brain, it has to be autoimmune—it’s lupus.”

As she yanked out a chair and irritably sank into it, the others paused for a second. They better not be scared of stepping into a lover’s quarrel, this had nothing to do with Eric being a prick at her. “C’mon, who else agrees with lupus?” Amber asked, staring at them one by one.
